Amazon announced a dedicated page for customers’ product recalls and safety alerts on July 25, 2023, bringing notices about purchases in its store into one place. The company said it already notified customers proactively; the change gave those communications a home inside the customer’s account. For buyers trying to work out what to do with a recalled item, the page brings the warning and the route to a remedy together. [S1]
Amazon described two ways into the recall information: a personalized email and a banner at the top of the customer’s Your Orders page. The banner links to the personal recalls page, which provides hazard details and links to the recall notice for options such as a refund, return or repair. Those are possible remedies attached to the notice, not a promise that every recalled item qualifies for all three. [S1]
For selling partners in the United States, Amazon also described an optional Recalls Logistics Service. Sellers who opt in can have Amazon notify purchasers, issue refunds on their behalf and manage return logistics. The announcement does not give the service’s fees or establish how quickly customers complete a return. [S1]
A recalled-product refund is different from a claim for harm caused by a defective product. In its August 10, 2021 announcement expanding the A-to-z Guarantee, Amazon described a process starting September 1 for property damage and personal injury from products sold through Amazon.com. It said it would pay valid claims against sellers under $1,000 and would not seek reimbursement from sellers who follow its policies and hold valid insurance. The policy and insurance conditions matter: the announcement did not offer every seller an unconditional exemption from the cost of a claim. [S1][S4]
Under the earlier A-to-z announcement, customers could contact Amazon Customer Service, which would notify the seller and help address the claim. Amazon said it would step in if a seller did not respond, bear the immediate cost and separately pursue the seller. If a seller rejected a claim Amazon considered valid, Amazon might intervene while allowing the seller to defend the product. The new recall notice and a decision on an injury claim are separate steps: Amazon’s announced claims process includes a validity check and denies unsubstantiated, frivolous or abusive claims.
