At NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, visualizers use the Discover supercomputer and datasets from supercomputer models, alongside filmmaking tools such as 3D modeling and animation, to build detailed visualizations. [S1]
One animation draws on climate datasets and emissions maps made by NASA researchers and external partners. It shows emissions from power plants, fires and cities spreading across the planet with weather patterns and airflow. [S1]
NASA Goddard climate scientist Lesley Ott, whose research fed the visualization, said scientists and policymakers seek to account for where carbon comes from and its impact on the planet. The animation makes the connections between weather patterns visible, she said. [S1]
