The Artemis Distributed Simulation brings together separate models of rovers, landers and habitats so NASA teams can envision a lunar surface mission. Elements can be added or removed to create scenarios, which can run on preset settings or respond to real-time and randomized changes. [S1]
People participating in a scenario can work together using video walls, a mock mission-control console, virtual reality platforms and a lander piloting facility. Whittington said the simulations she helps develop have influenced decisions by NASA architecture teams; she also emphasized regular communication to understand teams’ needs and limits. [S1]
Whittington recently became project manager for NASA’s open-source JSC Engineering Orbital Dynamics software, known as JEOD. It models spacecraft trajectories by calculating gravity and other environmental forces to simulate a vehicle’s position and orientation over time. [S1]
