A delivery robot can move an order without removing people from the job. Looking back at the March 11, 2017 weekend, NBC’s March 10 report described remote operation and human handlers accompanying deliveries. DoorDash co-founder Stanley Tang presented small, short trips as robot work that could leave longer, more complex orders to couriers. That was a company argument, not workers’ testimony. [nbc]

A useful worker-impact brief would keep two records: which orders couriers receive, and what accompanying handlers must do. Washingtonian’s March 10 account adds questions worth putting in the second record. It described robots stopping for people ahead and attributed designated pedestrian crossings to Starship’s local operations head. Ask whether those situations require attention, waiting or intervention; the report does not document handlers performing each task. [washingtonian][nbc]

For couriers, request comparable records of order distance, time spent and pay before and during any trial. For handlers, request paid hours, assigned responsibilities and time awaiting instructions. Include remote operators rather than treating remote control as work without a worker. These are proposed reporting questions, not a claim that the companies kept or supplied such records. Moving an awkward short order off a courier’s schedule could be useful. It could also change which paid opportunities remain. Neither possibility settles the outcome. Match the company’s allocation argument against workers’ accounts and the work needed around sidewalk stops and crossings. Without that evidence, claims of better earnings, protected jobs or worker agreement would go further than these launch reports allow. [nbc][washingtonian]
